Rita, the Jetski that Swims on Land
Snakes

I don’t know where to begin with the story of the Margaritaville Jetski.  We call her Rita for short.  “I oughta write
a book”, as the saying goes.  But you can get a pretty good sense of who she is from this site.  We own it and there
are no ads.  There are photos and a Trop-Rock song on most of the several pages, so do visit them all.  The music
players are safe to open.  If you click on “Snake’s Photo Stream” it will take you to our Flickr site, where you can get
an idea of some of the events we have attended.

The former Jetski, former riding lawn-mower is now an Art Car featuring a deejay-quality sound system, numerous
lights and strobes, a Twinkie cannon, kid-pleasing water-gun squirt jets with remote control, and countless decorations
in a Jimmy Buffett theme.  It’s the evolution of a Jetski.  More subtly, it tells the story of Man’s ethos, his rise
from the base beginnings of the fight for mere survival.  Thru both Good and Evil he has learned to achieve the lofty
pinnacles of higher awareness.

Mascot of the Parrot Heads

Rita is the mascot of our local Parrot Head Club chapter, the Galveston Bay PHC.  She was instrumental in garnering
for us the much-coveted Golden Coconut Award for 2010, which is given at the national level to the most outstanding
club of the year.  To learn about our club and access our excellent newsletter, visit:  http://

Our major event is called the Riddles In The Sand (RITS) music festival and charity fund-raiser, and is held the last
weekend of July.  We also hold chili cook-off events, the local in March and the regional in September.

An important national event we do is in New Orleans, called Pardi Gras, and is held every Martin Luther King weekend,
in January before the regular Mardi Gras season begins.  It’s a full-blown bead event with a King and Queen, and a
parade.  The event supports duel charities, Musicians’ Clinic and Cops 8, benefitting the NOLA locals who need it most.
The year after Katrina it was our convention which was the first to bring some life back to the devastated area, and
that year we provided the funds to replace the street signs on and around historic Bourbon Street.  The new signs
were being hung as we held our festival, and a rep from the Mayor’s office made a speech giving us the “Keys to the
City” (ironically, it was the very next day that Mayor Ray Nagin himself made his infamous “Chocolate City” speech; we
were an all-white group and we just had to laugh).  Founded by Trop-Rock musician Jerry Diaz, here is the site for
that:  http://www.pardi-gras.com/homepage.html  and yes, it has a photo-page, too.

Art Car is born

The inspiration for Rita, that first twinkle in Daddy’s eye, came from our first visit to the magical Burning Man art
festival.  Last year there were 50,000 attendees, and it is the second-largest social event in the Western
hemisphere behind Rio…. http://www.burningman.com/

Returning home from that first festival run, we were surprised and delighted to learn that Houston is the Art Car
capitol, and each May is host to the largest Art Car Parade in the world (no kidding!).  The original club can be read
about here:  http://www.houstonartcarklub.com/   This year the big event happens to fall on Dale’s 55th birthday, on
May 22nd.  He has requested to be car #55, so here’s hoping that he gets it!  The parade is sponsored by Houston’s
quirky Orange Show Center for Visionary Art.  You ain’t in Kansas anymore, Dorothy…. http://

Recently the art car folks formed a 501(c) splinter group which is a major participant and attraction in Houston’s New
Year’s Eve extravaganza, called Gloworama.  The new event hopes to rival NYC’s famous ball-dropping party.  Info, and
clips of last year’s celebration, can be seen at:  http://
artcarsofhouston.org/

Rita has won numerous trophies, and has been pictured in several publications, including the Houston Chronicle; Alvin’s
Advertiser/Sun Times; Bay Star Group; Galveston’s local paper; several local tropical newsletters; and the Avi Casino
brochure featuring the Phins to the West event in Laughlin, near Las Vegas.

She has her own little page on Facebook (with some pic’s too), so drop in and give her a “Like”…. https://
